Volunteering Tips from VP of Construction

Volunteering with Habitat for Humanity of Hillsborough County Florida is a fun, fast-paced, and fulfilling experience. With our next build starting this week, we asked our VP of Construction, Ron Johnson, for the top three tips he would share with those headed for the build site.

#1. Safety is always #1

The safety of our volunteers and staff is our highest priority. At the start of the day, the site supervisor will go over the safety rules and answer any questions you may have. Depending on the scope of work for the day, volunteers will be given safety equipment including eye protection, gloves, and hard hat. We recommend not wearing jewelry, loose-fitting clothing, and items that could contribute to an accident. All volunteers are required to wear closed-toed shoes.

#2. You’re in good hands

We work with a large number of volunteers – both skilled in construction and unskilled. All volunteers are supervised by our trained construction staff. Don’t be afraid to ask questions to the site supervisors or even other volunteers. We can use your help whether you are an experienced builder or you don’t know a sixteen-penny nail from a spackling knife!

#3. Bring a positive attitude

Plan on having fun while putting in a hard day’s work. Remember the purpose for which you are volunteering – to build a quality home with a hard working future Habitat homeowner!
